In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art, and Social Practice

In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art, and Social Practice examines how artists in North America have drawn on Buddhism as a methodology of art practice. It considers how Buddhism has contributed to important developments in contemporary art including the dematerialization of the art object, a phenomenon that radicalized art production and was key to the development of conceptual art and participatory art practices. The exhibition demonstrates the cultural impact of Asia on North America and reflects on an ongoing history of cross-cultural encounter and exchange.
In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art, and Social Practice is guest curated by Haema Sivanesan, Director, Leighton Studios and Program Partnerships. This exhibition draws on research undertaken during her tenure as Curator, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, generously supported by funding from The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, Hong Kong and Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York.

Bow Biennial: Four Unique Perspectives
As we focus on our local community this fall, we bring back the Bow Biennial. This has traditionally reoccurred every two years here at the Whyte Museum and with a short pause due to the pandemic, we are happy to bring it back for our fall exhibition!
This Bow Biennial highlights four artists from Alberta, Amy Dryer, Wanda Ellerbeck, Barb Fyvie, and Eileen Murray who have their own unique style of creating art. All share the same sense of place in their work expressed in distinctly different ways.

MEET THE ARTIST - Saturday, 28 October, 1 to 3 pm
An exhibition of retro and current works spanning Peter Deacon’s career. The significance of the relationship between location and autobiographical history has been a significant factor in all his artistic work since 1975. Some works are of a large scale; some of it on canvas, board or copper, utilizing a diversity of mediums and processes ranging from photography and painting to etching and drawing. Parallel to this mainstream activity, he has always produced small-scale work. These intimate and immediate pieces have instigated the approaches used in more definitive works. They are deeply thoughtful considerations of place and space by an artist who continues to contribute greatly to his adopted country both with his work and with his teaching.

His ‘mediums’ are different as now they are stone and canvas but his POV has remained the same.
